Are you ready to give your novel a fighting chance at greatness?
Could you use some help slaying those grammatical gremlins?
I could be just the editing partner you need!
My name is Breanne. As a copy-editor, I help independent authors make their manuscripts shine.
I will work with you one-on-one to find those tricky errors of writing that can pull readers out of the world of your story. Of course, I fix issues like spelling and grammar. But it’s also part of my job to look at how sentences flow together, and make sure that your intended meaning is as clear as possible for your readers.
I’ll explain what I do in more detail on my Services page.
What Can You Expect From Me?
I am based in the United States, and I only edit in US English. My main goal as an editor (aside from using my editing superpowers to clean up your manuscript) is to work with you as a partner, and help you to unearth the strongest version of your authorial voice.
I study writing and I study voice so that, like a cop-sense or a spidey-sense, I have developed ‘editor-sense’. I can just tell when something in your writing is veering off course.
None of that, however, means I get to tell you what to do or break into your imaginary world and reconfigure it to my liking. You are in the driver’s seat. I am just a guide, an advisor, a pocket-sized wizard whispering advice on your shoulder.
I believe that the best editors are invisible – but the best books, with very few exceptions, have benefitted from the help of an editor.
Why Am I Qualified to Be Your Editor?
For one thing, I have plenty of practice. For the past year, I have been employed professionally as an editor and writer for a prolific blog. In addition to that, I have worked as a ‘hobbyist’ editor for nearly eight years.
I fell into the world of editing pretty much by accident. A few people on a writing forum I was part of asked me to clean up their work for them, and I agreed because I thought it would be fun. Yes, that’s right, I said fun.
From there I went on to edit many short stories for budding fiction writers, and even one novel-length work. It was an amazing experience to see that project through from start to finish! I’m sure most people would not have done it (in fact, many before me had attempted it — and failed). Out of a deep love for the craft of writing, I completed that project pro bono, as the lawyers say.
I’m not telling you this so that you’ll think I work for cheap or free — I have progressed past that point, thank you — but to illustrate to you the unique qualities I bring to the table:
- I will be a champion for a project that I care about, no matter how big or small. And I will see it through all the way.
- I have chosen to do this because I enjoy it. You won’t find anyone who will work harder for you than someone who doesn’t feel like they are working!
- I have spent the better part of a decade training myself to spot those toe-nibbling gremlins better known as SPaG errors and typos!
A Final Note About Me
I am a lifelong student of writing and a crusader for creative living.
I currently reside in suburban Minnesota, where the long subzero winters allow me plenty of time to play with words indoors, curled up in my reading chair with my laptop, a hot mug of tea at my elbow. (This is the image you should have of me when you picture me working on your novel – it’s usually accurate.)
In my free time, I like to play video games and watch procedural dramas. (Don’t ask me why I love them so much. Maybe it has something to do with how structured and orderly they are?) I have a Siamese cat named after Frank Sinatra who, in his twilight years, has found a love of singing in the stairwell in the middle of the night.
We will have plenty of time to get to know each other once we begin our literary journey together! Hop on over to my Services page where I will tell you exactly how my editing process works.
